SLZB MR Series

This page accumulates Frequently Asked Questions about SLZB-MR Series devices.

πŸ” What are the differences between different MR models?

The key differences lie in the chipsets used. A summary is provided below, while a detailed description is available here.

πŸ“‘ How should I allocate the antennas for the best performance?

We reccomend to position antenna with some angle one to each other:

This should not be treated as advisable antenna positioning only, not a rule. Just a generic recommendation.

πŸ”§How can I update firmware?

You can update Zigbee, Thread firmware, and SLZB-OS via the web interface. Go to the update section and select what you want to update.

Also, to change the mode of Radio SoCs, you do not need to think about firmware updates - just go to the mode section and select desired modes.

🧩 I want to flash SLZB-OS via Type-C cable. How can I do that?

Go to https://smlight.tech/flasher/#SLZB-06open in new window, tab SLZB-06/MR Series, select the appropriate firmware version, connect your device to your PC, and click Flash firmware.
The system will erase your Core SoC (ESP32) and flash the firmware from scratch.

Please note: this process does not affect Radio SoCs (CC26XX and EFR32XX). They are untouched.

πŸ” How can I reset the device?

Please follow these steps:

  1. Power off your device (e.g. disconnect from the power supply).
  2. Press the physical button on the top of the device and hold it until step 5.
  3. Power on your device (connect power, either PoE or Type-C).
  4. Wait until Blue and Yellow LEDs on the side of the adapter start blinking.
  5. Release the button.

Your device will reboot, and factory settings will apply.

πŸ›°οΈ Can I run Matter-over-Thread and Zigbee simultaneously?

Yes. Base scenario is: EFR32 SoC for the Thread network, and the CC26XX SoC for the Zigbee network.
While this is a general approach, the reverse combination (EFR32 for Zigbee and CC26XX for Thread) also works extremely well.

❓ Can I run Zigbee and Thread on each MR Series model?

Yes. Each model is based on quad radio:

  • Zigbee/Thread on SoC1
  • Thread/Zigbee on SoC2
  • Wi-Fi on SoC3
  • Bluetooth on SoC3

The only differences are in the SoCs used. More details are here.

🐞 My Zigbee2MQTT does not start. What is the problem?

While there could be many reasons, here are the most common issues:

  • Wrong port chosen (defaults are: 6638 for SoC1 - EFR32XX, and 7638 for SoC2 - CC26XX)
  • Port/Radio SoC is busy with another software (e.g. ZHA already connected when you try to start Z2M)
  • Incorrect firmware or mode selected. Ensure your device is flashed in Zigbee Coordinator mode.

πŸ“š Do you have a manual for running Zigbee2MQTT, OTBR, etc.?

Not specifically, but please explore this manualβ€”most use cases are covered here.

🌍 Can I use the adapter in a remote location via VPN?

Yes. The adapters feature VPN (via WireGuard) functionality.
You can place your adapter anywhere in the world and connect to it.

🌐 What is Ethernet-to-Wi-Fi bridge mode in the Mode tab?

Imagine you have a garage outside your house with Ethernet but no Wi-Fi.
You want to connect Zigbee and Wi-Fi IoT devices (sensors, plugs, etc.).
This feature lets you do the following:

  • Connect your SLZB-MR device in the garage via Ethernet
  • Turn Bridge Mode On
  • The MR device creates a Wi-Fi access point
  • You connect your Wi-Fi devices, and they appear in your home network

BINGO!

⚠️ This Wi-Fi should be used only for IoT (low-traffic) devices.
Do not stream videos or watch Netflix in 8K via this connection.

πŸ” Can I run two Zigbee networks on the MR device?

Technically, yes. This can be:

  • Zigbee2MQTT + ZHA
  • Zigbee2MQTT + Zigbee2MQTT
  • ZHA + ZHA

🧩 My Home Assistant integration SMLIGHT SLZB does not support SLZB-MR2 and SLZB-MR3.

Support for SLZB-MR2 and SLZB-MR3 was added to the SMLIGHT SLZB integration in Home Assistant version 2025.06.
